Though dental problems can be common and pervasive, they can also be prevented. Much of our oral health is in our control. Maintaining a consistent and thorough oral hygiene routine can help us avoid many maladies that can be both painful and difficult to treat. If you notice any problem or symptom in your teeth or gums, it is best to see a dental clinic as soon as you can. Some of the popular issues to watch out for are tooth discoloration, tooth sensitivity, bleeding gums, excessive bad breath, and tooth decay.

Tooth Discoloration

There are many causes of tooth discoloration, some preventable, others not so much. Some people’s teeth are simply more vulnerable to staining than others. In order to reduce discoloration, the first thing is to take a look at your diet. Much of what we eat and drink could actually be having a negative effect on the color of our teeth. Dark-colored, acidic drinks like coffee or dark sodas can break down the enamel on the outside of the teeth and cause stains. Other common staining culprits include tobacco, smoking, dip, colored candies, and darker fruits like cherries and blackberries. To counteract yellowing at home try drinking water after eating meals to wash food debris off the teeth. Practicing proper brushing techniques is another common and effective method to break down any staining remnants.  

Tooth Sensitivity 

Tooth sensitivity is a common symptom of many underlying oral health problems. It often occurs when the protective layer of the teeth called dentin is broken down and the nerves are more exposed and irritated causing pain and discomfort. Tooth sensitivity can be caused by receding gums, gum disease, harsh brushing, cavities, over-whitening, and an excessive intake of acidic, sugary foods. Some people, much like tooth discoloration, are more susceptible to tooth sensitivity. Strategies to combat tooth sensitivity include using toothpaste specially formulated to not irritate the teeth, opting for a soft bristle toothbrush, avoiding any overly cold or hot foods, and limiting your intake of harsh, acidic foods.  

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are often a side effect of brushing too aggressively. While they can also be symptoms of gum disease and gum inflammation, more often than not, they can be prevented by adjusting how you brush your teeth. The first step is to select a toothbrush with softer bristles. When brushing, move in a gentle, circular motion avoiding rubbing up against the gum area. Additionally, be sure to floss. Though tedious, flossing is an excellent tool to ensure your oral hygiene stays in shape and is a primary combatant of gum disease. Excessive Bad Breath

Bad breath can happen to anyone and is completely normal. Perhaps you had a particularly pungent meal or you forgot to brush your teeth the night before. While occasional bad breath is completely normal, persistent bad breath can be an indicator of something more serious. Consistent and difficult to manage bad breath can be a symptom of gum disease, cavities, or even oral cancer. If you find that your bad breath is constant and difficult to mitigate through brushing teeth or any oral mint, contact your dental clinic for an appointment. While it could be something as normal as chronic bad breath, it is best to rule out any other more serious conditions.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay, when left unmanaged, can cause serious dental deterioration. Tooth decay can happen due to tartar and plaque build-up in between and on the surface of the teeth. Ofen this build-up is due to an inconsistent tooth brushing routine. Leaving food debris and build-up in the mouth can cause the tooth to decay as well as infect the gums. Aside from consistent brushing, using a fluoride rinse after brushing your teeth can help strengthen the enamel—the protective layer of the teeth. Lastly, seeing your dentist consistently, twice a year is important in ensuring that everything in your mouth is operating smoothly and soundly.
